Big Nate Book review: Big Nate on A Roll

The rest of the play is kind of a blur. I can't stop thinking about Artur. Hey, that rhymes!

In Big Nate on a Roll, Mister Perfect joins Nate’s scout group and ruins everything for Nate. The third book in the Big Nate series. What do I think?

I don’t really have much to say about this book.

I will say that Nate is pretty mean to Artur for the whole of the book. He only hates him because Artur has the girl he wants and the life he wants.. not that Nate wants to suck-up to the teachers. Hah.

Speaking of Artur: While he is a major character in the story, he appears way too much in the book. There are so many pages with him and so little pages without Ellen, Marty, Francis, Teddy, hell, I only saw Mrs. Godfrey on 3 pages or something.

Eh, pretty mediocre book if you ask me.

Big Nate Book review: Big Nate Strikes Again

 

I'm so mad at Megan's tonsils.

Nate is stuck doing a Ben Franklin project and is on the same fleeceball team with his arch enemy Gina Hemphill Toms. Gina is of course a crappy character, but her jerkiness is actually executed perfectly.

While the book is the main focus here, i really enjoyed the benjamin franklin comics drawn by nate in this book. lincoln pierce is able to convey the mind of an eleven year old in just a few drawings and i find that awesome.

Marty is a ridiculously annoying dad in this book, constantly assuming nate and gina are dating because they are partners. in my opinion, that just felt out of place, because marty was just seen as a dumb single dad who cared about his kids and cooked properly. Now he is just a stereotypical dad who assumes his child is dating if they hang out with the opposite gender.

Anyways, with a few flaws, but a great storyline and great art, this was a really good book.

Big Nate Book review: The Boy With the Biggest Head in the World

a.k..a big nate in a class by himself

The first non-Wimpy Kid review here. Is it better then the first Wimpy Kid book? No. I actually think they are on the same level.

Nate sums up the mind of an eleven year old boy perfectly - Hates school, loves snacks and comics. We can relate to his character very much and that’s why we like him. And he’s not just relatable, he’s funny. His dialogue is funny. His character is funny. He’s funny.

But what I DONT like is his friend trio. At times all they do is insult each other and treat each other like morons. In fact, at one time, Nate reveals he met Francis while hitting him with a lunchbox. It makes you wonder how they’re even friends.

The adults are a different level. Their selfish clueless behavior is so realistic that it makes you feel like you are Nate and you can understand why he hates them so much.

This is such an epic book and you must read it!!

Movie review: Disney’s Christmas: Cabin Fever

IT'S ALIIIVVVEEEE!!!!"

I don’t have a download of this film or Disney+ anymore, so here is a review based on what I CAN remember from the film.

A Cabin Fever film has been bound to exist since 2013, hyped up over and over, and after ten years, we actually get one. And is it that good? I must say- yes.

All the suburban white yippie moms whining about how Greg doesn’t believe in Santa Claus is a trend that has been going on and on for YEARS and YEARS. Considering Santa isn’t real though, I have no problem with it.

I do have a problem with how Rodrick acts about the whole snowplow incident as if he knows Greg did it, when Rodrick knows nothing in general, if you think about it.

And I also do like how there were a lot of different things from the book and the film. Combining Santa’s Scout and Alfrendo to make Elfrendo was genius on their side. The book and movie actually kinda have different plots, and I actually love it. Asides from being a mega-fan there was actually a reason to see this film.

Book review: No Brainer

 

When I’m gone, I hope my family doesn’t try and bring ME back to life. Because if coming back means having to babysit my great-great-great grandkids, I’d rather everyone just let me rest in peace.

This is undeniably undisputedly the WORST Wimpy Kid book ever. I’d rather watch The Long Haul 25 times instead of reading this five times. First of all, these events are so unrealistic it makes me wonder if Jeff Kinney ACTUALLY went to school. Not once have I seen ads anywhere in my classroom, hallways or playground at school. And nowhere at my school I have seen any signs of my principal being a robot. Although, I almost never see him. I wonder what he could be doing in his leisure time.

Secondly, the jokes and gags are delivered terribly. With little to no description of the events, a slow paced events of order, my expectations for this book were not met. Everyone thought the book was going to be like the first one, but it was actually terrible.

AND THE FUDGEDOG SIDE PLOT IS RIDICULOUS. Cities, schools, clashing over some chocolate tofu? Which, by the way, sounds DISGUSTING. I just wonder how Jeff Kinney comes up with this, in a bad way.

AVOID THIS BOOK.

Movie review: Disney’s Rodrick Rules

Rodrick's been taking me under his wing.

Can THIS compete with the David Bowers version? No it cannot, but it lives up to it pretty well. It’s much more better then the 2021 movie.

The story relies on Gregory and Rodrick, and unlike in the book, they care for each other like brothers should and it’s actually very wholesome. They are more caring and that makes the climax of this movie even more better.

In-fact the bond is so wholesome that Greg doesn’t even get angry when Rodrick calls it a diary.

Frank has more screentime in this movie, and while he is very funny, Chris Dia and Steve Zahn cannot compete.

Rowley is the most annoying character in the book series, and that is exeggarated very hard in this movie. I wanted to break my screen every scene Rowley appeared in.

This film is very great. The comedy scenes hit the spot (especially when Greg becomes popular at school) and it was a massive improvement from the last one.

Book review: Diper Overlode

 

Rodrick wanted to get a few photos that would really tell people what Loded Diper was all about, which is how we ended up in the bathroom.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Diper Overlode was released by Penguin Books Australia on October 25, 2022. The book was highly normal, but the Wimpy Kid community has mixed thoughts. Here, I’m telling you my (kinda) fully honest thoughts.

SWEET, SHORT, AND WIMPY

So here is a short summary of Jeff Kinney’s latest (published, not announced) Wimpy Kid book.

The book takes place in December 2007, and Jan-Feb 2008.

Like in previous books (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Diary of a Wimpy Kid Do-It-Yourself Book, etc), Greg always talks about how wants to be famous. However in this book, he says he wants to have a close relationship with someone famous so he doesn’t deal with the down-sides. His brother’s band, Loded Diper plans on getting famous, and he wants in on it. So he joins in on what they’re doing and it’s a loaded ride (Get it?).

 

Characters

Let’s talk about something the book needs and has - characters. Greg being in the book is actually pointless, because he isn’t even the main character. It’s 85% Loded Diper and 15% Greg. This book was so focused on Rodrick, that Kinney is looking on starting a Rodrick spinoff. I kinda wanna stick to Greg. Anyways, the main “supposed-to-be” antagonist is Bill. He isn’t over the top a moron, but a pretty unlikable, stupid character. He’s very immature for his age, if ya ask me. He’s the only Loded Diper member NOT in high school, but still lives with his parents. The last time he said that was in 2004, 4 years ago in “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules”. So, Bill just isn’t likeable to me.

Susan, Frank and Manny don’t have a role in this book (they’re in it, but for 6 pages or something).

Story

Okay, the story.

One thing I really don’t get is how Greg is literally either with Loded Diper for every single second, or how Rodrick tells him what happens. The story is good and simple but it wasn’t good enough for me to LOVE it, like “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever”. That one was good. So good, that despite being the 6th book, is going to be the 3rd animated Wimpy Kid adaptation. (Kinney, you’ve waited for this nine years long. You finally got it!)

One thing I actually liked about the story was something most people complained about, how much Rodrick it has in it.

Rodrick’s the best character to me. He’s funny, a jerk, and older but not wiser. It’s kind of a good thing there was more Rodrick.

My last thoughts

So to sum it up, the book was good. It wasn’t “HOLY CRAP! THIS IS A MASTERPIECE!” and it definitely wasn’t “Gosh, that was terrible.” It was “That’s awesome, but it could be WAY better.” Like most/some Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, my cheese rating is 3/5.

Movie review: Disney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Disney’s 3D adaptations of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books have of course been made to attract the franchise to a new, younger, modern audience. And for some long-time fans of the series, this failed miserably.

I just started reading this series in 2019 when McDonalds bundled short Diary of a Wimpy Kid books with every happy meal. The only one I DO remember having was the Do It Yourself (Maccas edition) book. So obviously I haven’t been reading this series for long, but what are my opinions on this film?

So it’s basically Diary of a Wimpy Kid but with half the plot cut out, shortening in it to literally fifty three minutes. How dissapointing is that?

But the decent animation and CGI and great script make up for it, but what would have made it better was if the soundtrack score was actually GOOD. This basic 2010s kids movie score is just not it for Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

So the rest of this review is going to be me talking about the characters.

So Greg is voiced by Brady Noon who delivers his lines well, but sounds like he has a cough during this entire film. He really captures the essences of what a selfish person Greg is in this movie with just his voice.

The deviousness of Fregley in the original trilogy was disgusting to me and I really hated his character. But in this movie, they actually made his disgustingness.. FUNNY?!

What is not funny is Rowley. In this movie he straight-up takes an idea from Greg and uses it to his popularity and acts like a jerk after his cast injury. As Greg has said multiple times “He’s left-handed! He can feed himself just fine!”

Ok, so this movie was actually pretty good. For some reason, I didn’t like it the first time I saw it because the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series is supposed to have a funny feel. But to younger me, with the background music and everything, it just felt sad. But now I’m (3) years older, I actually kinda like it!

Book review: Big Shot

The best thing about being an athlete is that you can retire YOUNG. And that would be great for a person like me, because there are lots of places I'd like to visit and things I'd like to see.

For months this has been my least favourite Wimpy Kid book. Why, you ask? I will tell you with pleasure.

Big Shot - a big piece of sh..erbet chocolate. It has a very boring start (which makes me wonder, how did THAT take 10 days to write..

Kinney..?) The story is also highly unrealistic, and why the hell would a basketball game be held in a prison? Why would the winners go home first? All these questions are never answered, and that is why I hate it.

With a scattered plot and unfunny jokes that make Greg sound like the moron he is, stay away from this book.

Book review: The Deep End

If there's one thing I learned today, it's that God has a sense of HUMOUR.

Stop playing wit me. Yall only like this book because it’s a Wimpy Kid book.

If you are looking for unfunny Christ-related jokes by Greg then here you go. But one thing that is remotely funny by my standards is the Jimmy Dogfish plot and I hate how it is abandoned by the middle of the book. After that the book just becomes unrealistic as with the first sixty pages.

Book review: The Meltdown

…I could buy myself a pair of robot legs, I could get a half hour of extra sleep each morning

Blah blah the series went downfall after the Long Haul blah blah- Complete NONSENSE. The series went uphill from there and this book is a hilarious example of that! But that is not all I have to say.

The book relies on a winter snowball war, and it is actually one of the FUNNIEST plots in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series in my personal opinion. The character development and the information about Greg's neighbourhood kids is something we haven't seen in other books.

Greg also has to do a social studies project earlier in the book, and he chooses Italy because he likes pizza but doesn't know much about it, which is unfortunately oddly relatable. I don't pick Iceland for a history project because I know much about it, I pick it because I like LazyTown.

I love this book and you shall read it with a nice cuppa tea.
